That said, Kenya is one of the few safari destinations I regularly recommend throughout much of the year because different seasons suit different travellers.

This is Kenya's main dry season. Vegetation is thinner, wildlife concentrates around water sources and game viewing tends to be more predictable.

That said, one thing I've noticed repeatedly when helping people plan Kenya safaris is that many automatically assume the busiest period must be the best period.

That isn't always true.

If somebody is travelling primarily for photography, wants fewer vehicles around sightings or simply prefers a quieter experience, I often find January, February or November can be equally rewarding.

If you're searching for the classic Kenya safari experience, this is usually the strongest period.

The migration herds typically enter the wider Mara ecosystem from around July onwards, although timing varies each year. Charlie notes that migration movements can be unpredictable and recent years have shown significant variation compared with historic patterns.

One thing worth knowing is that popularity comes with trade-offs.

During peak migration season, I often advise travellers to stay in conservancies rather than the main reserve itself. The thing that stands out to me about this period is the balance. You still get excellent game viewing but often without the crowds associated with July and August.

For photographers, the combination of clear skies, warm temperatures and lower visitor numbers can work particularly well.

March to May: The green season

March marks the beginning of Kenya's long rains.

April and May are typically the wettest months of the year.

Many travellers automatically dismiss these months.

Personally, I think that's too simplistic.

The reality is that Kenya doesn't suddenly become a bad safari destination when the rains arrive.

November and December: Short rains and shoulder season

November sits in an interesting position.

The short rains usually arrive, but they are often less disruptive than the long rains.

Many showers occur during afternoons or evenings rather than lasting all day.

Because of this, November is one of the months I frequently discuss with travellers looking for lower prices but who still want good safari conditions.

December becomes progressively drier towards the festive season.

By Christmas and New Year, demand rises significantly.

The Great Migration is usually visible in the wider Masai Mara ecosystem between July and October.

August and September are often regarded as the peak months.

However, one lesson I've learned from arranging migration safaris is that wildlife does not follow calendars.

Rainfall patterns ultimately determine where the herds move.

Charlie's view is slightly different from many generic migration guides. He points out that while Kenya offers excellent migration viewing, Tanzania often provides more consistent migration opportunities across the year because the ecosystem is much larger and less concentrated into a single area.

When would I personally visit Kenya?
