Botswana Family Safaris
Botswana family safaris are among the best wildlife holidays in Africa for families who value exceptional wildlife, uncrowded safari experiences and high-quality guiding. For the right family, Botswana delivers some of the continent's most rewarding wildlife encounters, from elephant-filled riverbanks in Chobe to predator-rich private concessions in the Okavango Delta. The trade-off is cost. Botswana is rarely the cheapest safari destination, but it consistently offers a level of exclusivity, privacy and wildlife quality that is difficult to match elsewhere.

Is Botswana Good for Families?
Yes, Botswana can be an excellent family safari destination.
The important thing is understanding what Botswana does differently.
Unlike some safari destinations that combine wildlife with large resorts and extensive entertainment facilities, Botswana focuses on wilderness, wildlife and immersive safari experiences. Families spend their days on game drives, boat safaris, mokoro excursions, guided walks and wildlife tracking experiences.
For many families, that is exactly the appeal.
One question that comes up regularly is whether Botswana is suitable for children. In my view, the answer depends less on age and more on interests. Children who enjoy animals, nature and being outdoors often thrive in Botswana because every day feels different. There is always something to discover, whether it's a pride of lions, a herd of elephants crossing a river or a fish eagle calling across the Delta.
What surprised me most when travelling through Botswana was just how exclusive many of the safari experiences felt. In parts of the Okavango Delta, we would spend long periods completely alone at sightings. Compared with many of Africa's more famous safari parks, that sense of space is remarkable and is one of the reasons Botswana has developed such a strong reputation amongst experienced safari travellers.
The trade-off is that Botswana generally appeals less to families looking for resort-style facilities, children's clubs or lots of non-safari entertainment. Wildlife is the focus here, and that's what makes it special.
What Is the Best Age for a Botswana Family Safari?
For most families, Botswana works best from around seven or eight years old onwards.
This is not a hard rule, and some camps welcome younger children, but there are practical reasons why Botswana becomes easier once children reach school age.
Many safari camps are unfenced. Small aircraft transfers are common. Activities often revolve around wildlife viewing rather than structured entertainment. Children need to be able to follow safety instructions and remain engaged during game drives.
Botswana Safari Suitability by Age
| Age | Suitability |
|---|---|
| Under 5 | Limited options, specialist planning required |
| 5β7 | Possible at family-friendly camps |
| 8β12 | Excellent |
| 13β18 | Outstanding |
| Multi-generational families | Excellent |
One pattern I see repeatedly is that children aged eight to twelve often get the most out of Botswana. They're old enough to appreciate the wildlife but still young enough to be fascinated by everything around them.
Teenagers often enjoy Botswana even more.
Walking safaris, photography, conservation discussions and tracking wildlife all become part of the experience. Botswana can feel less like a holiday and more like an adventure.
What Makes Botswana Different From Kenya and Tanzania for Families?
The biggest difference is exclusivity.
Kenya and Tanzania offer some of the finest safari experiences in Africa, but Botswana operates on a different tourism model.
Much of Botswana's safari industry is built around private concessions and low visitor numbers. This means fewer vehicles, greater flexibility and a stronger sense of wilderness.
Having travelled in Botswana's private concessions as well as Kenya's private conservancies, I still think Botswana feels more exclusive overall. One thing that really stood out to me was how often we were the only vehicle at a sighting. That changes the entire experience. Instead of sharing wildlife with multiple vehicles, you feel as though you're experiencing it on your own.
That doesn't automatically make Botswana better.
The trade-off is cost.
If your priority is maximum value and a wider choice of family-friendly properties, Kenya often has an advantage.
If your priority is privacy, exclusivity and uncrowded wildlife viewing, Botswana is difficult to beat.
Botswana vs Kenya vs Tanzania for Families
| Factor | Botswana | Kenya | Tanzania |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exclusivity | Excellent | Very Good | Good |
| Wildlife Viewing | Excellent | Excellent | Excellent |
| Family Activities | Good | Excellent | Very Good |
| Beach Extensions | Limited | Good | Excellent |
| Cost | High | Moderate | ModerateβHigh |
| Teenagers | Excellent | Excellent | Excellent |
| Younger Children | Good | Excellent | Good |
If a family tells me that they want the most exclusive safari possible and have the budget to support it, Botswana is often my first recommendation. If they are looking for maximum value or travelling with younger children, Kenya is often the easier option.
Which Areas of Botswana Are Best for Family Safaris?
The best family safari destination in Botswana depends on what type of experience you're looking for.
Chobe National Park
For many families, Chobe is the easiest introduction to Botswana.
The wildlife is excellent, the logistics are straightforward and river safaris provide a different perspective from traditional game drives.
I often include one or two nights in Chobe when designing Botswana itineraries. Botswana is an expensive destination and Chobe can be a very effective way of adding extra safari days without spending every night in the Okavango Delta. I've also had some memorable experiences there photographing large elephant herds coming down to the Chobe River to drink. Those sightings have stayed with me.
The only drawback is that parts of the Chobe riverfront can become busy, particularly around Kasane. Where possible, I prefer camps positioned away from the busiest sections of the park.
The Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is Botswana's most famous safari destination and one of Africa's most unique ecosystems.
It combines:
-
Game drives
-
Mokoro excursions
-
Boat safaris
-
Walking safaris
-
Exceptional predator sightings
If wildlife is your primary priority, this is where I would spend most of my time.
One thing that genuinely surprised me about the Okavango Delta was how good the wildlife viewing remained even outside the peak flood season. When I travelled there during March, we still saw huge amounts of wildlife, including multiple leopards every day, large numbers of lions and regular wild dog sightings. The landscape was different from the flooded Delta that many people picture, but the safari experience was still exceptional.
For families with older children and teenagers, the Delta is often the highlight of the trip.
